I Won’t Know Sweet Music Until You Return..

“Do what makes your heart sing Carlos,” said Pastor Brown.

This was potentially one of the last times my Pastor would remind me of this life changing truth. I was in a silent state of shock for about two weeks because those wise words finally made their journey from my heart to my hands.

“Well, there’s something I need to tell you. I made a big, very big decision. I quit my job.”

“Oh. Wow.” Pastor said with a look of concern on his face.

“My last day is next Monday. And I am going back to Cambodia on Tuesday,” My shaky voice uttered.

“Ba-Ha!” Pastor Brown burst out in joyful laughter.

Our conversation in the car that day was like the beginning of a new song for me. As a musician,  I understand the importance of a great introduction. I remember my jazz voice teacher always stressing the importance of the first and last notes. The first note you sing establishes the mood and sets the entire song up for success. Well, my introduction certainly grabbed everyone’s attention who heard it. In musical terms, I would describe my news of retuning to Cambodia as very fortissimo coming from someone who had been pianissimo for far too long.

“I let a song go out of my heart. It was the sweetest melody. I know I lost heaven ’cause you were the song.” – Duke Ellington
